Did Some Shopping Yesterday

I always say I won't go to any stores on the Friday after Thanksgiving. Well, certainly not to fight crowds at 3AM over a flatscreen TV (have one already). And I certainly won't be lining up around the parking lot at Kmart or Target on Thanksgiving night. But I will sometimes go to the stores later in the day, when crowds start to thin down. And I did just that yesterday, around 1PM.

Shot of Kmart in Hollister, California, set to close
in February 2020

I just had to see what Kmart was like yesterday, what with it about to close by February. On other days in recent years, the parking lot at the Big K has been mostly empty as has the inside of the store itself. And they often only have one or two registers open. But yesterday, with Christmas on its way, several registers were opened and many people were waiting. And the parking lot was fuller than usual. I could not believe myself when I chose to get something at Kmart yesterday, but I wanted to get what I got (something for the gift exchange at work next month) before it ran out.Even though they were a lot of people, the store was hardly mobbed. The store has been pretty bare-boned since they announced the closing. And everything is discounted in some way. I'm not sure how many more things I'm going to buy at Kmart before it closes. It's been around since 1990. Target came to Hollister about four years later. How many of you still have Kmart in your neighborhood?

I decided not to try yo go Target, but passed by their parking lot and it was packed.

And they I went to the Goodwill to see what they had on the sale day, known as Blue Friday. I got a pair of leggings 20% off. Again, there was a long line of customers, but the store was hardly mobbed. I'd expected to see the clothing racks almost empty with clothing dropped on the floors, something I had seen last year on this day. But this year, the racks were still pretty full and no clothes were on the ground.

If I want to get out on the dreaded Friday after Christmas, this is how I will do it. Even though Kmart will be gone next year....

How the SpaceTime Reading Challenge works

You choose your book, from any part of the science fiction genre universe – hard scifi, military, scifi romance, space opera, first contact, time travel, whatever.  It’s up to you.  You add the book to your list of books read, with a review, as short or long as you like.  Make your own rules about ‘only Hugo winners’, or ‘only space opera’…  as you wish.

  • You don’t need a blog to participate but you do need a place to post your reviews (even one-liners) to link up. (blog, Goodreads, booklikes, LibraryThing, etc.)
  • Make a goal post and link it back here with your goal for this challenge.
  • Books need to be novellas or novels, please no short stories,  although anthologies count if they meet the page guideline. (At least 100 pages +)

2020 Newbery Reading Challenge

I'm doing this one again, and will try for the first level.

Picture
Welcome to another year of the Newbery Reading Challenge! Newbery and Caldecott books are fun to read - whether it's our first time experiencing them, or we're revisiting them from our childhood. If you want to challenge yourself to read more Newbery and Caldecott books this year, then you have found the right place!

Here are the rules:
Each book you read is worth points. You get:
  • 3 points for a Newbery Medal Winner
  • 2 points for a Newbery Honor Book
  • 1 point for a Caldecott Book (Both Medal winners and Honor books are worth a point.)

In addition to that, you pick a level to aim for:
  • L'Engle: 15 - 29 points
  • Spinelli: 30 - 44 points
  • Avi: 45 - 59 points
  • Lowry: 60 - 74 points
  • Konigsburg: 75+ points

You can get to this level with any combination of points you want. You can read all Newbery Medal winners. You can throw in a few Honor Books. If you want, you can even read 75 Caldecott Medal winners! How you get to your point level is totally up to you.

Also, anywhere in the point range for your level counts as completing that level. So for example, if you signed up for the Avi level and read 46 points' worth of books, then you have completed that level!

2020 What an Animal Reading Challenge

Doing this one again. Going to read as many books as I can.

1. Any book read for this challenge has to have an animal that plays a major role in the book (which could be fiction or non-fiction.) It also counts if a main character is (or turns into) an animal (define that however you'd like). In the past, books would qualify if an animal is in the title or on the cover, but that alone no longer qualifies. This challenge is for books related to animals and just because they are in the title or on the cover, doesn't mean it's about an animal.

These are the levels.

Level 1 - Read 6 books

Level 2 - Read 7-12

Level 3 - Read 13-20

Level 4 - Read 21 or more

My Books:

  1. White Fang--Jack London
  2. The Call of the Wild--Jack London
  3. Stud Rites--Susan Conant
  4. Mi Gato, Mi Perro--Katrina Streza
  5. Clan of the Cave Bear--Jean M. Auel

Trying Not to Think About Christmas...

... and yet I have no clue what to do for Thanksgiving, which is only four days away. Although it has not been a big holiday in my family in recent years. It's been quite different each year. I'll have to see what comes this year.

But even as I am trying not to think too much about Christmas yet, I cannot escape the reminders already in stores. Some stores are already playing Christmas music already. In fact, Kmart has been playing nothing but holiday tunes.

On a side note, the Kmart in my home town will be closing by next February. Our store has escaped the closing list for several years, but was unable to escape closure any longer. I have been amazed just how long the store lasted. I have been looking for stuff on sale at Kmart before it goes away. Just glad it will be around for the upcoming holiday.

And Kmart, like most other stores in town, has been sticked with Christmas since before the end of October, perhaps even since September. One just can't escape this.

But even as I try not to get ahead for Christmas, I did already get the idea for art at work in December. The craft I chose for then is a waterless snow globe. I needed to decide how to do it for class. Several different instructions can be found online, but I needed to pick one to use, though I actually came up with a way to make the globes that wasn't in any of the instructions. I needed to experiment at home, so I had to get some Christmas decorations and fake snow to practice with. (More on this craft to come. It will be done the first week of December.)

I have also been trying to avoid Christmas music at home until after this Thursday. If hearing it at the store is inevitable, then the least I can do avoid it in on my own. And I have vowed not to decorate for Christmas until this coming Friday at the earliest. And definitely no shopping this coming Friday, let alone Thursday evening.

The 20 in 20 Challenge! #Read20in2020

Going to try this new one. Click here.

Below are twenty categories (or prompts, if you want to call them that). The challenge is to read 10 fiction and 10 non fiction books. Thus reading 20 books in 2020!
  • You can choose to read a fiction and a non fiction for the same category if you want, but not more than one fiction and one non-fiction for any category.
  • You can read one book each prompt and do all the twenty categories too. Up to you! I only ask that the books be over 100 pages.
  • You can read 2 each month and finish at the end of the year, or read 1 each week and finish by May. That’s totally your call. (Even 1 per day is okay, but that’ll be some feat!)
  • You can track your progress in any way you feel comfortable. I’m not likely to be behind you saying “You’ve not read! You’ve not read!” (It might happen though! No promises)
  • If you review a book you’ve read for this challenge on your blog, Goodreads or Instagram, feel free to come to this page and comment. I’ll come read it for sure. And maybe, just maybe, others might too.
