G: Growing Up Skipper

#AtoZChallenge 2024 letter G

Barbie's sister Skipper was introduced in 1964, and has had her own line of friends that has changed over the years. Her friends have included Ricky, Skooter (a little more on her later), Fluff, Tiff, Ginger (see below), Nikki and Courtney (more on Nikki later). She's had two different boyfriends, Scott and Kevin. Skipper was discontinued in 2003, only to return six years later. Her history is in the video below.

The main reference made to Skipper in the Barbie movie was to a controversial iteration of the character in 1975, known as Growing Up Skipper. See the commercial below to see what the doll was all about. And watch this video as well.

Ginger (pictured below), a one-time friend of Skipper's, was also made with the "Growing Up" feature.

This was before the Internet and social media. No question on whether such a doll even be allowed to be produced today.

Skipper I remember! My sister had a Skipper doll -- just a regular one, no special "growing up" features.

I remember skipper. I did not have one though. I do not recall any of her "friends"

OMG - I watched the last video and cracked up when the boobs appeared. I do not remember a Skipper doll like this. I'm just laughing.

And, regarding your question to whether this "growing up" feature would be allowed in today's times...I'm laughing because then I guess all Mattel's boy dolls would need that feature too.
Just sayin'....

Sending giggles your way, Jenny

I vaguely remember Skipper - and didn't have one or know anyone who did.

I remember Growing Up Skipper, but I think it might just have been from the commercials.

I think they mentioned this Skipper in the Barbie movie.I had a Skipper doll, maybe even the first one made, but she was very traditional.hugs-Erika

I wanted a Skipper when I was young. I had a Barbie (wish I still did, it was the bubble hair, pearl earring, zebra bathing suit one!), but loved Skipper's long blonde hair. Unlike my own dark brown pixie cut. No. My parents got me a big talking Suzie Smart with her school desk.
