This runs piggyback to my Barbie theme last year. Someone who was doing a "silly songs" theme then (similar to my theme this year) mentioned having posted this song. I was not aware of the song until then. It was released in 1997, many years before the movie, and recorded by the Danish-Norwegian dance-pop group Aqua. One of the group's members wrote the song after seeing an exhibit on kitsch culture in Denmark that featured Barbie dolls. I did not know a lot of the "new" songs that came out in the 1990s. Perhaps the success of the Barbie movie has made (or will make) this song more popular now.
From link above:
Mattel sued Aqua for basically slandering the name of Barbie Doll. There was a big brouhaha about it, taken to several courts, but the case was ultimately dismissed. Later Mattel did use the song in promotions, only with a few modified lyrics.
Above is the official video by Aqua. The singer Tori V also recorded the song, and her video is below:
I also found this video of a kids' dance set to "Barbie Girl":

I love this silly song, but its lyrics do have a darker sexual undertone if you think about them and their implications. I'm not a fan of seeing little girls lip-syncing these lyrics. Probably because of the past bad blood between Mattel and Aqua, this song was not used in the Barbie movie, although it was briefly "sampled" in the background of one of the soundtrack's rap numbers.
I remember this song from the 1990s. There was another hit song by Aqua I liked better called "Dr. Jones" - which was a novelty song that's vaguely about Indiana Jones.
The song sounds familiar, but I didn't remember it. I used to work with someone who grew up next to the real Barbie and Ken.
I do remember this song!
I remember this song! So silly. But fun too
I'm not much into seeing little girls lip sync to this popcorn song given what the lyrics talk about. This is a fun, dumb song. Here I thought you were going to showcase the ad for Barbie in in the 70s. The commercial song was based on the hit movie, "Georgy Girl" starring Lynn Redgrave but they created the song "Barbie Girl" from that song.
I don't remember this one. Great post, Jamie.
I remember this one. Not really a kids' song to sing or dance to with those lyrics! But it's still a catchy tune...kinda like YMCA.
Oh yes, I remember when this song came out. I recently relistened to it, and wow. It's a pretty dark song.
I like this one a lot, and have heard it a lot, and have it as a post on mine one time. Also the Dr. Jones one by Aqua. Catchy little tune and fun video. :)
that's funny that after suing they decided to use the song.
I never was a Barbie fan, but now I play with the dolls with my great nieces a lot.
The innuendos in the lyrics make it difficult to watch kids dance to this song. Definitely for adults. All the best for the Challenge.
Now that's an oldie. Not a favorite for me, so maybe it best stay in the old files. :)
I've heard this song a few times and I thought it was fun but that's it.
Thanks for stopping by my blog. Have a lovely day.
